As citizens, we all have tremendous power, and what a better time to start a wave of change than than right now. Our actions don’t have to be big to make an impact, and everyone can get involved. Here’s a run-down of how to be an everyday ocean activist and playing your vital part in the fight against plastic pollution.
Fed up the amount of plastic you see? Be the complainer, the email writer, the sharer, the social media commenter and let big companies know we’ve had enough of single-use. The more people that shout loud, the more change will happen. ** complain through using official company complaint procedures and not to in-store staff. You want to reach the people pulling the strings!
Check out our campaigns and be loud with us!
Refuse single-use, and be stubborn if you get offered that annoying plastic bag. We can be polite when we decline, but stick to your principles and refuse when you can. The more we say no, the more companies will get the message.

Talk to your MP, and ask them to pledge for the Ocean. They work for you, so go and talk to them about plastic peeves and problems in your area. They can directly push the government to do MORE. Not sure how to write an MP letter? Here’s five pointers;
- Get the right details and address – there’s a link below
- Keep it simple – make your main points briefly and clearly
- Add personal stories – if you have them. Where have you seen plastic pollution? How does it impact you, local wildlife and environment, and the local community?
- Give evidence – send in photos or links to good information
- Take Action – be clear on what action you want your MP to take now
Anyone can sign up to SAS plastic pollution campaigns, from leading a Plastic Free Community, to their own local Million Mile Clean, to signing up to Plastic Free Schools. By getting involved you can tell us what you find, how it impacts you and your community and also the single use plastic you are eliminating. That Citizens Science is used directly to campaign for change.

We are sick of plastic pollution and sick of big industry pushing it on us for the sake of profits. Not only that, but blocking the systems change we need to see to turn of the tap at source. It’s time for the people rise up again against plastic, and in 2025 we will be doing just that.
