Is the Global Plastic Treaty Lost?

For those around the world battling with plastic pollution, a stalled treaty is a big blow. A hope of countries coming together to tackle plastic pollution has washed away with the tide for now. But we know that tides come and go, and there could be another chance for a legally binding agreement…

Ultimately, it was deadlock between those who wanted an ambitious treaty, and those who didn’t. Countries in the high ambition coalition (HAC), argued for bold measures to cut plastic production, and work to address issues of waste management, environmental and human health. While the Petrostates, those heavily reliant on the fossil fuel industry, argued against cutting production. No surprises there. In the end, it was stalemate.

But one thing to come out of the treaty was clear agreement from a huge number of people – that plastic pollution must end.

More than 900 scientists came together to sign a declaration, as well as joint statement from the 67 countries in the high ambition coalition.

It seems a small number of countries halted progress, but it was clear that the large majority stood their ground for an ambitious treaty, and some say a weak treaty is worse than no treaty at all. There is talk about further meetings next year and hope for a workable treaty still.

With the potential of a further meeting, the tide will come back, so coming together and taking action in our communities has never been more important. Surfers Against Sewage and our people-powered communities will be gearing up next year and continuing to take action.
