Engaging your Local Council
Encourage your community’s local council to vote on a motion and pass a resolution supporting the Plastic Free Communities journey.
Why?
Councillors can lead change, and make it stick. They influence all sorts of local organisations, like schools, hospitals and businesses, not to mention using single-use plastic in their daily work. Also, council members are usually from different political parties. So it strengthens the whole Plastic Free movement when the come together in support.
What’s the Motion?
The Motion must state that the council will:
- Lead by example and remove single-use plastic items from their premises.
- Encourage plastic-free initiatives, promoting the campaign and supporting events.
- Put a named representative of the council on the Plastic Free Community steering group.
Top tip: Use the wording above for the motion, and make sure it goes to Full Council.
How?
Show how important becoming a Plastic Free Community is to local businesses, institutions, and voters!
- Invite a friendly councillor to a local event, like a Mass Unwrap, Million Mile Clean, and share the share the action you’ve already taken.
- Tell them about the wider benefits for the economy, business collaborations, and health and wellbeing.
- Attend a council meeting and share your progress so far as well as what you can achieve with the council’s support.
- Work with a councillor who can submit the Plastic Free Communities motion.
